Making a Splash in Newton: Mayor Fuller Celebrates the Opening of Upper Falls Splash Park, a New Community Space Developed by Northland
Newton, MA – On Monday, June 16, Northland celebrated a major milestone in the Northland Newton Development as city officials, neighbors, and community leaders came together to mark the opening of the Upper Falls Splash Park. Developed by Northland in collaboration with the City of Newton, the new splash park was designed as an inviting, inclusive space for families to gather, play, and cool off during the warmer months.
Designed as a vibrant, family-friendly gathering space, the park features a lively splash pad, a climbing structure, and a shaded pergola. Set against a backdrop rich with history, the splash park thoughtfully blends old and new. Under the pergola, original railroad ties from the historic Saco Pettee mill era offer a nod to the past, while boulders unearthed during construction bring natural charm to the splash zone. Lush landscaping and native plantings will continue to grow and evolve with the seasons, creating a true urban oasis in the heart of Upper Falls.
The event featured remarks from Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and members of the Newton Parks and Recreation Commission, reflecting a shared commitment to building welcoming spaces for all. As the very first completed element of the Northland Newton Development, the splash park stands as an example of what’s to come: a community-first approach that celebrates connection, sustainability, and accessibility.
Once complete, the full development will include 822 residential units, including 145 affordable units, and will feature a mix of retail, green spaces, a splash park, bike paths, and more.
Northland extends its sincere thanks to Mayor Fuller, the City Council, City Hall staff, and the Parks and Recreation Commission for their continued partnership and support. Thank you to our partners who helped bring the vision to life: Stantec for design, Cranshaw Construction for construction, Lahey Landscaping for landscape installation, and Dex by Terra for hardscape installation.
